5th grade

 

We have reached the final stretch of the year. 3/23/26 begins the fourth and final quarter of 5th grade. It is such an exciting time as we work through our final unit, and experience all the fun "end of the year excitement" together. The last day will be here before we know it! So, let's soak it all in and make the most of our time together.

Quarter 4 Overview

Counting on Grace, (Paperback)

Essential Question: How does society benefit with adaptations

Novel: Counting on Grace by Elizabeth Winthrop 

Word Study: During word study, we will be utilizing Structured Word Inquiry (SWI) to increase our vocabulary and spelling skills. We will be learning about Greek and Latin roots along with prefixes and suffixes. 
 
Sentence Study: We will be using mentor sentences from our quarterly novels to identify parts of speech, types of sentences, and figurative language. We will also be making connections to SWI.
 
 
Writing: 
  • Narrative writing - Students will work on story writing.     
  • L 5.2 – I can demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
 

Reading Literature Standards:
  •  RL 5.1 I can quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. 
  • RL 5.3 - I can compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama. 
  • RL 5.4 - I can use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words.
  • RL 5.5 - I can explain how chapters, scenes, or stanzas provide the overall structure of a particular story, drama, or poem. 
  • RL 5.7 - I can analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or aesthetic of a text. 
  • RL 5.9 - I can compare and contrast stories in the same genre according to similar themes and topics. 
 
 
Reading Information Standards:
  • RI 5.1 I can quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
  • RI 5.5 - I can compare and contrast the overall structure of events, ideas, concepts, or information in two or more texts. 
  • RI 5.6 - I can analyze multiple accounts of the same event or topic noting important similarities and differences in the point of view they represent. 
  • RI 5.7 - I can draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate and answer to a question or to solve a problem efficiently. 
  • RI 5.8 - I can explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text, identifying which reasons and evidence support which points.

Scholastic Book Club Orders 

Our class code is QCDZK. I place orders from Scholastic at the end of each month. These book orders give our class a chance to build our classroom library as well as earn free books for our classroom. If you need any help with your order, please let me know! E-Learning Plan 

In the event of the need to call an e-learning day, we will be utilizing the schedule attached below. E-learning days will only be called if we have fair warning of severe inclement weather and have time to send students home with all their materials and devices.
