some of us blown if you feel like you can't hear us and let us know, I'm a walking around kind of person so we are all district we all actually who was Richard Roundtree on one of us but my name is Diane heimlich and I'm currently after a school as a social worker and I also write the title for plants have multiple roles but I am a tender in the district I bet I need to go so I swear to live in the SEL curriculum and he's building in a different way and I've been in the profession for 32 years so it's interesting to me. that puts even in the 1980s when I started we were doing as yell was just very different themselves I need my phone back on my phone and she said my caseload directly work second grade I have been social worker all of my career but I'm at I am the poor either, kiddo such a services coordinator but I am also social worker on my Kansas is my ECP I bought that and I think it's my 18th years until social worker but as saying in a little bit too I'm a traveling nurse and the role that as coordinator for the last four years and I have been a part of the FBI need that title of the name came about through the process that she's going to come over tonight and her guards and starting up our second step in the district so we've been doing it from the very many years and it's been kind of reboots and you guys so and I'm 2016-2017 we're so screwed steering committee that came together and we we searched basically social emotional curriculum that were out in the world at the time and then we decided on second step to try list we had a social worker needs Philippines pilot one of the program was at a certain grade level just to see before we implemented it will widen district-wide if we do about life first took a couple classrooms at each grade level and then the rollout was in Fall of 2018 to to kind of have an idea of how long you been doing this and Kinder and third and Then followed a twenty-nine-year-old out. First second third as for a little bit so basically that by 2019 from k-25 we were all using the second to freaking at that point in time Hickory Creek was using and then we decided as a chemistry between them Katherine talking about what's best for the district and I mean but we can fax it to have a Continuum of s death and so then inside fall of 2020 on Hickory Creek that also service like that just to give you a little bit of the background program for several years start by just talking in general about social emotional child in his lacking in skill to think of him when they managed to remove can they manage himself in the world through self-awareness somewhere in this has to do with how we know who they are and how they function a group of people are within a relationship looking at social skills and responsibilities and decisions so those are basically all of the areas that encompass get me home students you on gold have until end of the others establish maintain positive relationship and a croissant those are all things that we all need I don't need school put in what we're going to do is to video about two and a half men and one just trying to talk a little bit more about social norms there's a lot of talk these days about SEL social emotional learning but what exactly is it social emotional learning social and it's just as important as learning reading this learning process is most effective when it begins early and continues through High School social emotional skills are essential success in school work and life with SEL students learn to manage their own emotions and behaviors have empathy and show care and concern for others so the problem is it's actively make responsible decisions and maintain a healthy relationship plan to recognize what's happening inside them interview where their emotions which helps them deal with strong emotions and impulsive behaviors stop take a breath and think about a situation before acting students learn to identify others emotions and perspective which helps them empathize and show compassion matter who they are or what it's not difficult to imagine how this is important in the classroom and in life students learn to solve problems and peaceful ways and communicate assertively about what they need or want Justin get along with other students and get the help they need from adults Dennis Lange to make responsible resign from the future things can turn out better research shows social emotional learning students who participated at the L2 better academically and improved attitudes and behaviors and act and delinquent or destructive ways less often in United States due to strong social twice as likely to earn a college degree and nearly 50% more likely to graduate from high school and have a full-time job by age 25 just as important students who are socially and emotionally confident this means they're more likely to feel connected to school and do well and less likely to be left out or bullied simply put by participating in social emotional learning students learn the skills to succeed every facet of school and the rest of their lives I meant to say the beginning to the we'll send out the PowerPoint that were showing tonight if I can yell out after the person it will also be potent shelters in preteen what's the goals of emotional learning the gold is basically our goal as a district was implemented full for everybody to come across the entire District I think a lot of features do individual things in their classrooms and we were having the same during the same concept same language and that way every person in the whole school would be teaching the whole child back when I started education that wasn't such a it wasn't born so interesting. of course Howard Gardner came and said we have to look at all the analysis of children not just you know how was the first. I basically our goal is to create a positive School climate for Susan adults can fry and become he talked about the research a little bit with video for babies when they have social emotional obviously their attitudes about their self in school or better to pull social but factor in the whole environment the classroom is better and if the academic the rest of not having it would be more kind of Christmas I'm so obviously you weren't coming recent fake program and the second step program took time when they do free sleep studies they did a meta-analysis into about the one lasting social emotional back this is just the top 10 skills the basically when you think about your kids now it's hard to think about them so I'm looking around and see sometimes it's healthy to see Middle School just knowing I know some of the families and you would people kids it all different break my own kids are 15 and 21 and I think about these skills now my son's about to work portal and this is why the second afternoon which has killed that basically they said kids meet in the world they have to be creative people that have emotional intelligence judgment decision-making station negotiation impacts of West building to see people I can read right you need people that can work with other people the world is changing so much it's amazing to me and my current location how much education can you it's amazing to me from here from my 15 year olds my 21 year-old adhesions change how much the world has changed technology I tell my kids I said when I grow up we have one black and white TV and movie nine people living in my house and now and I had a phone on the wall my phone number I mean it's a totally different world but we're finding that is if we don't have to dance in the world so that's why I missed your call. only now can get into the classroom kids we had to set her kids here and this is wanted to tell you a little bit about the classes okay so the way that second step Deckers with him classroom varies a little bit TimeWise in the grade levels are in the garden is 25 less than the length is about 27 minutes of 1st and 5th graders 22 lessons and it's about 30 30 minutes on some teachers will he said all in one and then kind of Applied Concepts across the others will kind of break it up and put it into their schedule throughout the week what's I specifically in Grand Prairie is the ad art student to Grand Prix have specials for days a week and what most of the teachers you on this day is when they do their second step curriculum so that is kind of like it's kind of like a break Bernard or something like that to a lot of the teachers teach that second star by Prairie on that business day alright so in the early early learning through fifth grade second step curriculum is broken up into four. skills for learning minute to focus is on at the Z unit 3 Focus On Emotion management music for focusing on problem-solving and then there's several weapons within each of those unit okay so in the skills for learning on Section a unit they will be looking at focusing attention listening using self-talk and being assertive what's the weather in there there's a bat in all kinds of curriculum with focusing attention obviously it's going to vary from when they're little kids when they're older it's in a little different focusing attention can I purchase a greyhound a foundation there's a combination of activities that they'll do then incorporate song fun games with that they are each other too exciting concept but these are as an example of some of the cards the David said we would use to go along with the song if we're cooking cards or something stay with you where they're having to follow my pregnant when attention by following doing with the card by looking at them and then by hearing them to help me with attention Friday a different ways if I could reach you so you'll see it by Panic at the Disco LOL Jeanette concert today start something that I used to teach my preschoolers and do it some of these Concepts they get them for you and then using using talk to help themselves pay attention and to stay focused and those moments after having difficulty in class or you can come of that self talk to to refocus on what the teacher is doing or the conversation or having a friend Amanda being assertive how to fly in in those relationships with their peers with an awesome things like picking up help if they in the South talking but I feel like all these skills. to hear two been talking about you all the time again. There's a lot of times you called in when they lose wait for them to have this back on the skills and super important one because you know you're like what were you saying in your head and what happens and it helps to have those skills and helps all of us did you get in so then unit 2 the focus is on the Isle of Mists poster up here because you didn't need to return some of the things that we are teaching the students to look at others we think I saw her through school that's about what how do you do have somebody feel they got to look at the face and the body is so they're running how to read the emotions of others, this leads to us helping them to a compassion and have help moving them to come up with ways to help situated and then some of the concepts covered are identifying and understanding just feelings in general and feelings of others respecting similarities and differences and in there and their peers and then showing care and compassion the third unit then go get done is emotion management I'll get one of those listening to the song that goes along with stuff I think or feel get calm down it's kind of like a robot song so some of these songs are still going through my head after I listen to a Saturn stop the feeling calm down step two step music 604 parade the country are we feel feelings in our bodies again they're learning how to as I am talking recognize how their body changes in their hearts wake up when they're angry that they start to feel hot or sweaty how they feel when they're sad how can these body changes coming down those drowning so important to learn and how far the kids learn how to calm down and regulate as we would say if they're having bigger emotion especially in some of those pure conflicts or they any moment even at this young age me sometimes. Humane Society when it comes to homework and tests managing accusation disappointment anxious and hurt feelings those are all hard emotions and these ones Kids come out of their home and they now have to do parent Iraq so important that we help them learn how to manage some of those feelings you know it's come out of our home and then they go into a kindergarten classroom where they now are with 20 some other kids and they're used to hey Mom say something in my room is there to help them right away and now it's like I really like and I really want an the teachers not calling on me they're navigating a relationship where they're feeling left out or the most complex Twitter had so handling the states and then also finishing tasks and invoice put down if you notice something closer to free thing I can do it that's why would you send them to tell pocket like a taco Suboxone you say in your head all day long and you know you're going to say I can do it versus how I can't do this is too hard strategy by counting on taking deep breath and then the last one is problem solving I love the toaster with the board that's on it that kids are taught to say what the problem is I think of some solution to that problem knowing that solution out what will happen if I chose this solution will happen if I chose a solution what would that leave two and then the last one picked the best solution after that frontal lobe in their brain getting different developed as adults were able to kind of think your situation fully and compare them to other things we've gone through and kids are learning how did how did you this process so I love that so broken down solving problem playing fairly taking responsibility for solving factoring problems some a exclusion problems and again that's where that occurred in peace I'm helping them to too low be assertive if it's something unfair is happening handling name-calling dealing with peer pressure dealing with gossip and seeking help when they need it but this is a picture of Justin bent rail you seen some of them the posters let me hear some of that creatures and stuff so either used in a different kids song have a puppet that are a way to grow The Hope act out different situations it would help us apply these Concepts and then there are many kids are in the car. kid that teachers can show these situational car and then on the back is there for weapons so they're showing them they're teaching them there's no point to it the kids I really able to apply lot of the time that you need and then respond activities where they use the puppet or where they stand up and go on on one with each other to the practice different kind of bananas Ben has the song we do most of our our lessons are all online it's really nice for the teacher so because it's the basic is on the script that they can stay until it's simple enough. take it off and use it very quickly with the second quarters of things the teachers love when they tie with it but it also gives like additional things they can do throughout the week and how to wrap it up and like other things that they can you please rap for me and the kids love the card there just a guy think they would late a lot of them and I will say I'm coming hot second step in the classroom if your children had gone through Grand Prairie are you insulting and has a puppet I think they will probably remember I was walking with a box and then we look like it's a super exciting for all of us interaction sometimes we would have to puppy do different activities to interact with when they get older Sports created by, but there's a really really good videos not that at the very end for a curfew almost backed up to us as parents if you haven't already. Nicole you can go on on her the benefit of holding two as well as a family resources of videos that you can record at home all part of the kids at the teachers have that cell phone that you're home. In is Highway packed a lunch pack a little bit about common language and we do love it when you're able to see the language than any lessons and can help hear that hear certain times or certain Concepts easier it is for them to apply here and we're just working together La Petite work and I think over in Kapaa middle school did a couple years ago was adopted the Second Step Middle School curriculum has a very similar if it as his I forgot I may continue to add on to this so fat so ever teaching our students about money and taking turns and sharing when they're back in kindergarten and preschool once they get to the middle school we are just expanding on that so we're talking about fairness for the fact that we may have a problem that we need to talk together and we're not always going to have a win-win so how can we do that together so it does kind of add-on to the concept over also we're not getting away from those foundation and what we have done is gone digital Sonos fifth grade and then what we're going to do is show you a little bit of a sneak preview of what you your child sees digitally at Hickory Creek the weekly second grade grade State get beat last night in Hopkins on Thursdays if you're curious during that invite you three times and for example at the week of December when I'm starting December or December 1st to kick the winter and they are on unit 3 on some of the grade levels are at the end of unit to finish a data and then you also probably have received the community the monthly newsletter Scioscia Lisa I'm the newsletter and the last November we cast everything that they had learned in second step to supplement what do you are you cutting your student here at school and be able to typically as well they have a national advisory activity that they can supplement so it might be something that they utilize within the school and I do not track to be a kindness for that monster is supposed these are some of the unit so I'm very focused more on the on the mindset really gross Minecraft is a concept of a CL and that we have continued to I'm here at Frankfurt and so the first unit is on my setting goals and our teaching our students how to grow their brain that we have these amazing instruments in our bodies and helping facilitate that to the best of our end areas that are called what can we do to straighten those as well and it is hacked by the fact that you deserve a safe recent stream strategy that's one of the reasons Diane mentioned that we are happy that you're the bomb going s stuff because it and stuff around in research and being able to achieve those goals and handle as it has a difficult situation we do also have the second unit that talks about not behaving bowling in Caracas so I didn't or able to understand and developed the concept we then expand on yet so each unit will introduce don't work that unit they typically change the fact that we are in your problem solving information but then we may need to be able to understand the rules that are we have in the community of the school so they will go through and talk about what we need to stand up to bullies situation I respond appropriately and expand on that the unit 30 lock box emotions of decisions to as you can see if you near kind of what are our little ones are getting where they're burning it goes positive role of emotions at the is there myosin I have a sixth grader strong right now so I'm sure those of you who can empathize with me in front of the middle school is very difficult and then I think about my own boy do not need to go skip those brains right so I understand our bodies what's that mean how can you respond to appropriately cut off. Because we are strong emotion and that's okay and that's why we're keeping our students even here and preschool that angry feeling upset about something you're going to have sadness disappointment all of those strong emotions are part of light want me to read how we plan on it so we're trying to apply I'm at and I can do that last bullet bullet points on strategies to manage those emotions so that we can reduce the structural system that is a part of life I think the amount of Stockton on some of you may have had that today that I got for my when I got in the car and left my children you may have felt like you wanted to start the day over like I did when you first got in the car and even get to work yet and go back to work teacher students like algae grow into adolescent age off these are all natural part of life and we want them to feel good about it being able to conquer those days so you have to work on that social conflict again hotels approach we love that our students are achieving in all areas here in Frankfort so it's not just academic and we are so happy that we are able to Apple celebrations with them and we want to do the same with our social aspect of way so we can see that there are strategies to maintain a healthy relationship if they aren't getting along with your siblings may be there maybe it was Mom and Dad or grandma and grandpa so how can we tell him solve the situation and then also being as part of a community right because we have this responsibility so we can send the fact that we are parked can we talk to our part of a more outward Community when we become adults what can we do in life to help our community member we also talked about the fact that we have safety measures that are on Facebook that we have police officers that are part of our community and firefighters that are part of our community, things work together for them to be able to have a safe and healthy Atlanta Soccer Team. I think that this is probably one of those the biggest lesson that Wiesel teaches that it's not to do is to help us when we are in school owner and we are here to learn about but we are part of the classroom we are part of Frankfort we're part of Hickory speaker tells you again. And again when we have a situation we want to be take that perspective whether it is someone that we can empathize with or someone that we can problem-solve or maybe we are having a conflict that we can discuss the other person side of it I always like to get the example of a fax it look at this one situation typically I'll use a coffee cup with me some water bottle today we are all looking at the same water bottle but you may see it differently than I see it right now inside the label you say that Better Label are we both no I mean we see that water bottle it's there so we're teaching the children that there are multiple sides to the story and that is good to collect all of that information to be able to take us back then in order to maintain that healthy relationship when hot and then how to beat the Box on within the district the office talk about the opportunities they have out did you teach Aaron's walk which is our to lose worst program prevention program you would have received information about this a couple of months ago and leave the curriculum things worse than they did great and Erin's wanted to talk to all of are in the district start believing in her part of the back of the stuff and we utilize their curriculum on through the second set but instead of being taught by the teachers we do use the experts in our building which are social workers because there's a little bit more expensive a conversation coming from the bully and the victim of Ice-Cream are there any house sitting this and that you want to add a run so that part of our second stop as well are Common Sense Media civil citizenship is being taught in grades K through 8 how to discipline this is Muncie Community School and it does another country, I'm just teaching I feel you funny girl responds to bring out and then using this rather than because I'm over it. if you see called RCI or something or mention so anyone who may be struggling who needs specific interventions and supports throughout the district May participate in you are fine are here regarding now with something here so basically second step is a really hard so the way on a house foundation what interventions would be something everyone received here to Bebe's Kids that need a little bit of extra and then two or three if they need even more so sometimes you go to The Preserve hard that your group or sometimes we chose to consult with the classroom teacher and help them put things in place in classroom but it's a combination of both the second act is apart of That Into You how to use the forest part of the plant and each unit for dresses like I did mention but we also if you have a child who participated at Grand Prairie and Chelsea they have moments in each unit that you not every unit or less and has a whole week but it may have been on the start at the beginning of that unit and maybe a bottle of activity that you can participate in at home some of them are fun things from them I'd say he said you could on some woman at dinner conversation if you have a Merry Christmas and that would be the digital content and sometimes you make supplement in paper form we are going to show you how to log into that digital content if you'd like to look further it. And then you operated Communications as I mentioned either through the newsletter or maybe your test teacher maybe if you knew you would ever do Communications like I said about Erin's lost any of the boys cuz I'm to the unit's there's something that goes home still in the boy production units are for the event the only receive a dose of that I'm picturing pot to class at 1 go to class is at 1 last night okay if I ran a of a second breaker call First okay so then she was brought home and she got good at covering what they were and I also had lessons today they should be kept today Victory Packaging this is how you get be at the Fry's on the front has every single grade level is Heights preschool on kindergarten through eighth-grade you would go in that put that in just a moment I know how you do it but you would think I have it and it would bring him to the screen on the right side that's cute to prompt you to have an activation key once you create an account so if you already have an account and now let's see you already caught a first grader and now you want to. The third grade kit I'm using I already have an account for you just go to add activation fee if you are new to the second stuff and you would have to create an account put in your name and information and then put in the activation key whatever babe I love you so you'll see on my home screen I have pre-k through 8th grade out of money after this can't think of anything else emoji show you right now so I'm not logged in right now but you can see why you want me to but you would go to my account say anything so I can see on the right hand side and create account for new users and that would be your second step family profile and I'm a staff member for my board at 9 to look a little different so when I go to my dashboard give me see here at the shop if you had a student who was even kindergarten eighth grade Super Bowl and the Heat schedule, so if you had hopefully you don't have any regard for 2nd 3rd and 4th graders I have training camp the family program is wonderful if you click on the family profile you can me and resources and it's going to give you everything you need to know about the program and how you can support each grade level and father took on one company to do that good talk. Bernie said I'm fighting with you this these are the moments that I did mention so if you go to the last one you'll see the whole thing for your child for being responsible we don't ask them to do stop for a minute I will be happy for you to do that if I could about what you're trying to learn why it's important something to try to ask her child at home and then you might be able to be today together we succeed in responsible and then there are strong there are on different read aloud are supplementary that are sometimes featured in here that's kind of what you will see the access code so I can you're not going to put all of those grades but if you are a single key in there that is on that sheet of paper and that's another additional resource that we have that sleep a king cannot start work this is a free resources not so fun to sign up for your account you will have a direct link to this or you can do like I was going to do right now and I will sleep and I point you bring me to the A Team on page I have a 6th grader who wants to be on the same page screen time I've got a suggestion it's not something that we're asking you to follow or anything like that that's just good articles a good price as you can see. there's some voice real voices so it will talk to your team about different situation brings your conference what's going on this is a really good resource another resource that slaves here is our community resource guide in our community resource guide is located on the district website and that is just ate collection whether you're looking to find a therapist or you are looking for our resources as support group or you have lots of some kind and you need resources a whole slew of thing if you have a family member who did he mean there's a great resources for Will County and went out there and so you could utilize it for other foot oh I just want to show you the heck are you creating this is Jonathan sackson in the administration sent out in their newsletter if you had gotten the November newsletter that not since it's pretty much money at that Queen what emotions tell you and then but our friend called that place up Park in our emotions and our development and rewiring of our brains do we spell I can send remind me about how we roll if we plant our seeds and they were doing an analogy over Gardens and if you came to speed is it a good seat or a bad teeth how do we water it when was involved in the newsletter if you want to take a look he's our preferences as our offers going to be sending out invites at learn more about Derrick Rose to Child Development and also talked about the future of dropped report and again what that means for our students to become lifelong learner and then he would like today thank you I meant if you wanted to contact Anya and I never asked you are welcome to I would like to show you before we YouTube Cruisin if a question I want to just go over what we eat Lyford middle school so this is the Alexa that I just referenced how emotions affect your decision so I can see this is basically the sea it happens warm up they talk about how it affects your decisions and then they review the concept of the previous lesson when they do that they have a spine so it's all right to share some of them are trying to talk to your partner at no point is anyone chair if they don't feel like there is comfortable for them and then they talked a little bit about what those emotions are they have some videos in here maybe watch the video for that last name a guy's disappearance are they're going to discuss obviously in this I'm going to assume that in this blasted they hadn't asked you to do black upside and what were what were the good choices versus then there's an activity and that's when they're asking to talk about with my partner partner what decisions could you make instead talk to you a little bit more on the story of what could have happened as a result how can we resume our conflict resolution skills I meant by living in your own words how would you describe it I'm in Augusta is there Snapchat about it in class and then how can they take action that could have took a whole lot we would look like for your middle schooler against this is this is just a preview of one of those boxes in the XBR. and if you go into the parent portal you would be able to because I waited to see if what the f*** is would look like direct me to take a look at WellStar outside through gas if you'd like do you want me to and again we will send you this information and you can have direct access to those wings will be lied to check things out feel free to put in those codes in on the fact that your piece of the code they gave a screenshot Play Cher today I want to penguin as well as accurate to connect thank you for your time I know that you can spend this anywhere and we appreciate you taking us going to go back tonight and feel free to take a look
