Hello!
My name is Sarah Bakke and this is my sixth year at HCMS and my seventh year in the district. Previous to that my family and I lived in Phoenix, AZ where I taught special education and reading intervention to students in grades K-5 for 14 and half years. We currently reside in Manhattan. My daughter Olivia is a senior at Lincoln Way West and my son Ethan is a sixth grader at Manhattan Junior High.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Special Education from Northern Arizona University. I have a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Grand Canyon University.
My role at HCMS is instructing tier 3 readers in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, as well as pushing into the following classes to support tier 2 readers:
6th grade: Mrs. Cumbee
7th Grade:Mrs. Garrett
8th Grade: Mrs. Ament
Reading Intervention provides support toward the acquisition of reading skills. Here at HCMS, we aim to instill a lifelong love for learning. We believe that having a positive reading experience is fundamental for obtaining the necessary reading skills that your child needs for academic success. You can expect your child to work with their ELA teacher and myself in the classroom, small groups, as well as with me individually. I look forward to reading with your child this year!

In an effort to build passionate readers, we continue to build classroom libraries in which students have choice over the texts they select. There may be books in libraries that are identified by publishers as “young adult” due to the fact that our students are young adults. With that being said, “young adult” books are considered appropriate for up to 18 years of age. Please discuss with your children any parameters that you would like for them to follow as they choose texts from our classrooms.
