A district letter from our curriculum director, Janet McClarence, was sent out regarding our benchmark testing:

Frankfort School District 157-C currently uses a local assessment called FastBridge. FastBridge is a student benchmarking assessment that is administered to students in grades 1st through 8th grade and measures growth in reading and math. The aReading and aMath assessments are called “adaptive” assessments. Adaptive assessments are computer-based, and the items given will vary depending on the students’ previous responses therefore this assessment is referred to as a screener and something that students cannot "study" for.

The district screening process, often referred to as benchmarking, occurs three times per year (fall, winter, and spring). By administering benchmark assessments to every student, we can determine the need for student differentiation, intervention, or program placement. In addition, this information, along with classroom performance, is used by each grade level team to guide instructional practices and provide another measure of student progress to share with parents.

The Individual Benchmark report provides parents with their child’s scale score and the band in which that score falls. There are 4 bands: College Pathway, Low Risk, Some Risk, High Risk. The report also shows a student’s percentile rank. The school and district percentile ranks are a local ranking with just our 157-C students in the norming population whereas the national percentile ranking shows where your child ranks in comparison to all students in the same grade level that took this FastBridge assessment. Each benchmarking period a new data point will be added to the graph and shared with parents so student growth can be monitored.

The FastBridge spring assessment window is May 5 through May 16 that each student in grades 1st through 8th will participate in. You will receive an Individual Benchmark report on June 3. This report will be sent home with your child.

QUARTER 4

ELA: Heroes

In the last quarter, ELA students will be developing an understanding of heroes and the journey they take to become such. We will make connections to real life heroes and heroes of literature, specifically in mythology. Our first novel will be The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. In this novel, we will study the main character Percy and his journey of heroism while making connections to Greek Mythology.

Literary Skills: being able to determine an unknown word or phrase with specific connections to Greek mythology, studying characters, settings, and events, analyzing visuals and text connections, and finding and supporting a common theme among different stories.

Informational Skills: inferences, determining the meaning of unknown words and phrases, revisiting text structures, being able to explain procedures, ideas, and concepts within an informational text, and integrating information from two or more texts to write about a topic.

In writing, we will develop strong, evidenced based opinions to write essays.

In word study, we will continue to study Greek and Latin roots in Word Inquiry.
