Hello and welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! My name is Hailey Smith and I am thrilled to be joining Chelsea Intermediate as a third grade special education teacher. I graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education and my LBS1 certification. I am very proud to be a Tiger once again, as I attended Chelsea as a fourth and fifth grader myself! I have a true passion for working with students and am dedicated to creating a positive, safe, and engaging learning environment. I look forward to a fun-filled year of learning!

For specific learning objectives and classroom information, please visit the page of my co-teacher, Staci Chronos.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Additional Resources/Information for Parents and Students:

Reading: For reading, you can have your child log on to either their freckle, epic books or newsela account. For your epic books class code, please refer to your child's homeroom teacher's webpage. Their username and password information can be found on the sheet that was sent home in the beginning of the year and also again on Monday, March 16th. (If you can't find this login information, please feel free to email me and I can send you that information). These sites will allow the students to read fiction and non-fiction texts and answer multiple choice and written response questions that align to our standards that we have been working on this school year. Students can also google IAR practice tests and practice taking the IAR test. We have done this several times in class so they should be familiar with how to navigate the site. Below is more information on an amazing thing Scholastic has put together for families to access. In addition, I would also encourage students to drop everything and read a book for at least 30 minutes a day!

Math: For math, students can access math games and practice their facts on zearn, khan academy, prodigy, or their freckle accounts. All of their account information can be found on the student login sheet that went home the first week of school and again on Monday, March 16th. I also have many math websites under my cool links section of this webpage that the students can access. We have worked so hard this school year for them to learn those facts, so please keep up the practice daily so we don't lose/forget all of that hard work we have done!!

Social Studies: There are many great non-fiction articles on newsela and non-fiction books on epic about Native Americans. Feel free to read more about our unit on the Native Americans.

Additional Resources: Scholastic is offering a Learn at Home website. This free resource provides your children with 20 days of exciting articles and stories, videos, and fun learning challenges. Children can complete them anytime, in any order. They can work on their own or together with you and your family. Our active learning journeys are available on any device and will provide your child with up to three hours’ worth of exciting learning experiences per day. They can go on virtual field trips, meet best-selling authors, or dig deep into a topic they love. We hope that you and your children stay safe and healthy, and wish you the best of luck during this stressful time.
