Dear Families ~

School is done for the year.  The closing of one door and the opening of another . . . . .  Our kids became familiar with this theme when we read the novel "Bud, Not Buddy" during the third quarter.  This year is definitely one for the history books, and one that I am sure none of us will soon forget.  Although things have been difficult, there were also many, many positives that came out of this crazy situation.  The biggest positive being that our Chelsea families found a way to make remote learning fun and engaging for their children.  Words cannot even begin to express my sincerest gratitude.  Thank you parents and kids for the amazing job that you have done throughout this last quarter of school.  Your efforts have been beyond my expectations!! I hope that all of you have a wonderful summer, and I cannot wait to see everyone back at school! Sending virtual hugs to all of my students!!  I would love to hear from all of you during the summer.  I will be checking my e-mails frequently.  Please drop me a note and let me know how you are doing.

Have a wonderful summer!  Wishing for health and happiness to all!

Take care,

Mrs. Lang

School Items Pick-Up and Drop Off ~

The district office will communicating a date in June for families to come and pick up items that students had at school.  There are many important items in these boxes including . . .  report cards, work books, One Book/One Summer Book, important district information, student supplies and personal items, and a note and gift from me.

**Important:  When you come to pick up student boxes, please return any school items that are at home!**

- My ELA students brought home the 4th grade reading textbook.  Please make sure that this book is returned.  Put my name and your child's name on the book when you return it using a sticky note - (and maybe some scotch tape so it will stay on the book).  This will help me send home reminders to any student that may forget to return this book.

-Other items that may need to be returned include libary books from Mrs. Meszaros, the shared library, or my classroom library.  Consumable workbooks will not need to be returned.

Class Zoom Meeting this Week

Tuesday, May 19th from 1:30 - 1:50! :  I will email the invitation Tuesday before 11:00.  If you do not get this e-mail, please contact me.  If your child is not able to make it to our Zoom meeting, please contact me with a good time to call home or have a Zoom call.  It really is important that I touch base with your child each week.

Weekly Lesson Plans ~

As we have done in previous weeks, the fourth grade team will post daily lesson plans for all fourth grade students.  These will be posted on the district web site, and they will also be posted under the Downloads section of my web page. It is probably easier for your child to access this information through my web page, as the Power Points are a bit more student friendly.  However, the district web site does contain the encore activities.  During the fourth quarter our class would have had STEM for our encore class, so those would definitely be the activities I would encourage your student to complete.  However, any of the encore activities would be great enrichment!  Completing these lessons is highly encouraged, with the focus being on ELA and Math.  Science and Social Studies are optional activities, but these are some of the lessons that we would have been completing this quarter.  All lessons from previous weeks we will be left up in case any student needs to go back and view the lessons that they were not able to complete. We hope that we have streamlined the activities in order to make them easily accessible for all home learners.  Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have about the lessons.

Live Learning Games - I will host live games for the kids each Tuesday and Thursday an 10:00!

Summer Learning Activities: Please check my Downloads section for optional activites that the fourth grade team has put together for our students.

School Closure Information ~

There is plenty to do to stay engaged at home, but here are a just a few of my suggestions . . .

MATH

Prodigy – The kids love this site!

Edulastic – This is IAR Practice, but the site is great for covering our standards.  The kids can take practice tests and then get their scores and the answers.

Zearn – Students can go back and do the bonus question for any of the lessons that they have completed.  They can also review the lessons!

student.freckle.com - Homeroom Class Code - Lang5W

ELA

getepic.com  (Kids can choose to read books that I have selected, or they can choose their own books!)

student.freckle.com - ELA Class Code - LangKJ

Scholastic has put together great learn at home activities . . .    https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome/grades-3-5.html

Students can also log-in to StoryWorks using our Class Code – (This is in the email that I sent home. I love this site!)

I have sent home our reading textbook.  Students can pick a selection and answer the questions after each story.  I will need the textbooks returned when the students come back.  I have also sent home a novel titled Island of the Blue Dolphins.  The students may keep this book – they can mark up the text as needed.  It’s a Newberry Award winning book that is about a girl left on an island to fend for herself.  Kind of fitting for these crazy times!  I have also loaded a number of selections onto Epic Books that go along with our curriculum!  My guess is that you will not run out of things to do.

I will be checking my emails daily.  Please contact me with any of your questions or concerns.  Take care of yourselves and your families!!

Curriculum - 4th Quarter

Math - Module 4 - Geometry

This module introduces points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles, as well as the relationships between them.

**If your student is having trouble with any of the math lessons, please google Duane Habecker along with the grade level, Module Number and Lesson Number.  His videos will serve as a wonderful "Second Look" for any student needing to review the lesson of the day.**

ELA - Quarter 4 Unit - What is a Hero?

This is such a fun unit for the kids!  We will be looking at what makes real life heroes and what makes make-believe heroes.  Our fictional novel is "The Lightning Thief" by Rick Riordan.   'In this story, twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is on the most dangerous quest of his life. With the help of a satyr and a daughter of Athena, Percy must journey across the United States to catch a thief who has stolen the original weapon of mass destruction — Zeus’ master bolt. Along the way, he must face a host of mythological enemies determined to stop him. Most of all, he must come to terms with a father he has never known, and an Oracle that has warned him of betrayal by a friend."  The kids will have a hard time putting this one down!  Along the way, we will also be learning about many mythological characters that are introduced in the story.
