Welcome-Announcements-Curriculum

Welcome to 4th Grade!!!  Below are Announcements and an Overview of the Curriculum of Quarter 4

Below are the Themed Thursday School Spirt Days for March and April 2024:

4/25..."Level Up"...wear your favorite video game/character shirt!

For those parents that want to sign up for "Remind" (a group text alert from me) for the 2023-2024 school year please follow these instructions.  But please read the section just below titled "Departmentalizing" to understand that I will have two classes this year...a morning homeroom class and then a different class coming to me in the afternoon.

If you are in my MORNING HOMEROOM CLASS please text to the following number: 81010 the following message: @hermansonh

If you are in my AFTERNOON CLASS please text to the following number: 81010 the following

message: @hermansonp

Each different class (my homeroom class and my afternoon class) will have a different texting group through Remind.

I recommend all parents sign up for this as I'll be sending out time sensitive or important texts that you must know immediately rather through an email.  I don't text the parents about academics, assignments or upcoming assessments.  All academic info is on this webpage under the "Week At A Glance" section or down below on this page.  I text about 1/2 days/Early Dismissals, School Spirit Days, Hot Lunches, Holiday Info, Due Dates for Various Items, FastBridge/IAR Dates and other general school/classroom information.  Again, all academic information will be on my webpage.

My phone DOES NOT ALWAYS alert me when you respond to me through the Remind App.  Therefore; I may not respond right away to a question or text because I did not see it yet.  I do check the Remind App here and there throughout the week but not regularly.  The best way to get a hold of me is email as I check that constantly...even over the weekends, nights and holidays.

DEPARTMENTALIZING/CONTENT SPECIALIST

This year 4th Grade will be departmentalizing our subjects as 5th Grade has for years.  Students will not be in one classroom and have the same teacher all day for all subjects anymore.  Each of us fourth grade teachers will have 2 sections of students that rotate in midday.  I will be teaching 2 sections of Math, Science and Social Studies while my partner, Mrs. Roney, will be teaching 2 sections of ELA (Reading, Writing, Spelling, etc.).  In other words, I will have my “Homeroom” and teach them Math, Science and Social Studies in the morning while Mrs. Roney teaches her “Homeroom” ELA in the morning.  Then we switch classes midday and I teach HER “Homeroom” Math, Science and Social Studies in the afternoon while she teaches MY “Homeroom” ELA in the afternoon.  So your child will have 2 classroom teachers (Mrs. Roney and myself) this year as we will have 2 sets of students.  Mrs. Roney and I have taught together for over 11 years and work very well together.  Your child will have a great year working with the both of us…we are a solid team that puts kids first.  We also, as an entire grade level, are excited to start this new method of instruction to 4th Grade!

Encore Classes for the year are as follows:

Quarter 1---Art daily

Quarter 2---Spanish daily

Quarter 3---STEM daily

Quarter 4---Music daily

PE is daily year round and Library is every Wednesday afternoon year round.

***VERY IMPORTANT***---IF YOUR CHILD IS ABSENT (PLANNED OR UNEXPECTED) PLEASE TRY TO LOOK UP THE EUREKA MATH LESSON ON-LINE. IT WILL BENEFIT HIM/HER TO LOOK AT THE LESSON ON GOOGLE. THAT WAY WHEN THEY RETURN THEY DIDN'T MISS A BEAT IN MATH CLASS. I REALLY APPRECIATE THE FAMILIES THAT ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE ON-LINE RESOURCE.

SIMPLY SEARCH ON GOOGLE "Eureka Math Grade 4 Module (whatever module we're on) Lesson (whatever lesson we're on).  A gentleman named Duane Habecker will actually teach and model the lesson for you/your child.  It's a great review for tests, if anyone is confused or simply need some reteaching.  I even go on there!

Or go to my "Eureka Math Resource Padlet" link (above to the right).  The Eureka Padlet has every Problem Set page, Homework page, instructional video for every lesson, answer keys and more!  Feel free to look at any lesson for more practice, reteaching or prep for an upcoming test.

CURRICULUM UPDATE FOR QUARTER 4:

🧮 MATH:

Eureka Module 6: Decimal Fractions

This 20-day module gives students their first opportunity to explore decimal numbers via their relationship to decimal fractions, expressing a given quantity in both fraction and decimal forms. Utilizing the understanding of fractions developed throughout Module 5, students apply the same reasoning to decimal numbers, building a solid foundation for Grade 5 work with decimal operations. Previously referred to as whole numbers, all numbers written in the base-ten number system with place value units that are powers of 10 are henceforth referred to as decimal numbers, a set which now includes tenths and hundredths (e.g., 1, 15, 248, 0.3, 3.02, and 24.35).

🧪Science: Energizing Everything

In this unit, students explore energy! Students investigate how energy is stored, how it can make objects move, and how collisions transfer energy between objects. Students also construct devices that convert energy from one form into another, such as heat into motion and electricity into light. We will explore the following mysteries...

Mystery 1: How is your body similar to a car?

Mystery 2: What makes roller coasters go so fast?

Mystery 3: Why is the first hill of a rollercoaster always the highest?

Mystery 4: Could you knock down a building using dominoes?

Mystery 5: Can you build a chain reaction machine?

Mystery 6: What if there were no electricity?

Mystery 7: How long did it take to travel the world before trains and planes?

Mystery 8: Where does energy come from?

Mystery 9: Can you turn a flashlight on without touching it?

🌎Social Studies:

Midwest Region:

We will be studying The West Region this quarter.  Throughout our unit, we will be reading informational texts and also studying the locations of these states, identifying the capitals, and memorizing the abbreviations.   Students will explore the landforms, climate, people, animals, history, agriculture and manufacturing in the West.  Students will also know the states, capitals and abbreviations in that region and will be tested on them.  At the conclusion of this unit, we will begin our culminating activity to celebrate our knowledge of all 50 states.
